“What do I always tell you?” I said. Gently moving her hands away from her crying eyes, I softly repeated, “What have I told you since the minute we met?”

Never been a fan of net-memes, you know me. But I was amused by this one, most specifically because that is actually how I intend to go out.

And you know, I totally knew Paris would feel like that, even though it was just that one time. Now I feel bad that I never returned her calls. And stole all the money out of her purse.

Our hands are right there next to each other on the table.

I imagine placing my fingers on hers.

Very soon, we kiss. A little later, we are in bed.

She flinches slightly and moves her hand to her lap, looking away. Before long, she blusters and leaves, and I don’t hear from her for days. And of course then it’s all different.

The scaffolding started going up at around half-seven this morning.

There’s always construction work going on in the city, so no-one really noticed the noise over the traffic, until the structure started going up in front of our windows, and the sound of boots and metal on metal pressed in over the persistent hum of computers and air-conditioners.

When she talks about sex, it’s all about what she can do to you.

She’s a good-looking girl, and smart, but there’s not a shred of romance in her, and it’s like, at some point, her life has become all about control.

… A Softer World isn’t afraid to look me deep in the eyes and say “I know you”.

A Softer World is an absolutely beautiful webcomic that is often a little bit sphincter-tightening in how dark it can get. You should go there. Now.

I particularly love today’s strip.

Winsome Smile.jpg
Found during an office tidy.

I suspect that this was a fortune that I got in a cookie at one of those “We’re going to pretend that we’re still talking through things rationally as if we’ve been in a relationship for years but actually I’ve no intention of sorting things out because I’m already sleeping with someone else” meals…

If I’m right about the timing, I think it may have given me some small comfort, and you know, it’s true… My winsome smile has been my sure protection.

So the moral is, work on those winsome smiles, homies.

It’s the story of my life… I’m having to sell more beloved items…

That’s bad for me, but it’s good for whoever gets to buy them!

Go here to see my eBay items on sale at the moment. I’ll be putting more on in a couple of days (I find writing the descriptions quite tiring… I like to do it right!). All of these items can be delivered anywhere in the world! I’m frigging international, yo!

The items include:

  • Blast! #1-7 (The complete series, printing, among other things, Lazarus Churchyard by Warren Ellis and D’Israeli, for the first time.)
  • 2 issues of Revolver (Containing amazing work, including a beautiful horror story by Neil Gaiman and Mark Buckingham, a chapter of Dare by Grant Morrison and Rian Hughes, and star turns by Garth Ennis, Mark Millar, and John Bolton.)
  • 2000AD Prog 1384 (The one with the Shaun Of The Dead story, written by Edgar Wright and Simon Pegg, drawn by young buck Fraser Irving)
  • Lost Girls #1 and 2 (Which, frankly, you must have heard of by now… by Alan Moore and Melinda Gebbie)

I’m not sure how many of my regular readers (read “mates who like to humour me“) are actually comic readers, but these books all have universal appeal (with the possible exception of Lost Girls, which is very ”mature” indeed!) so worth a flutter.

Failing that, though, I’d really appreciate it if you’d spread the word in your respective social networks, as I’m certain many of you have friends who might appreciate a chance to go for one or all of these books.

I’m also selling a bunch of books, graphic novels, dvds and games at Amazon. Click here to see me shedding material goods like a dejected monk.

“Everybody needs something to believe in…” she says, and as I nod agreement, she continues: “And I believe that potatoes are psychic.”

She’s facing away from me, looking for milk in the fridge, so she doesn’t see the double-take that I know my face betrayed. I should have bloody known. She was far too perfect to be entirely sane.

Little bit more admin today…

You may have noticed (although hopefully not too easily, as I tried to integrate it into the design of the site as much as possible) that I’ve started including ads in the sidebar. If I can make it work in a non-intrusive way, I’m thinking of including a couple more, too.
