300 – Last Minute Thoughts

Today, I read two different, damning reviews of 300 by two bloggers that I enjoy. They are often engaging, talented, and intelligent chaps.

In both reviews, they attacked the film’s homophobia, and then elsewhere made snide swipes at the film’s homoeroticism, as if both were awful traits of a Hollywood gone wrong.

Also, both seemed to attribute parts of the film to the evil, anti-arab Amerikkkan propoganda machine that, as far as my dim recollection of past lessons goes, are actually matters of historical accuracy.

If they’d stuck with the attacks they were making on how badly made, or written, or dull the film was, I might have paid more attention, but as it is, the fact that a film that I’m expecting to be dumb and brash and loud and violent and ultimately meaningless can have otherwise intelligent people tied up in frantic linguistic over-political knots only makes me want to watch the damn thing more.

And that is exactly what we are about to go and do.
