Okay… I have been remiss in guiding you towards my work at Elephant Words.

Since the last time I mentioned it, I’ve written two pieces for Elephant Words.

One is called All The Gods, All The Monsters
The next is called Grateful

I hope you enjoy them… make sure to comment over there or over here if you do, and read the other work on display!

I’m not normally one to feel sadness over the passing of people that I have never met… in fact, it has become something of a running joke about me with Girl One (and in a slightly more embarassing way, her family).

However, I was incredibly saddened a short while ago to read that Mike Wieringo died over the weekend, at the age of 44. The story is here: http://www.newsarama.com/Chicago_07/Ringo.html

Mike Wieringo (or “Ringo!” as I always knew him by his signature on various comics and gorgeous pieces of art) worked very hard and very impressively as a comic artist on many high profile and more personal titles, and for all his work, was reportedly one of the healthier people you might meet… Having seen him on various art and comic websites and discussion boards, he was also clearly a very generous and modest man.

I always saw his work from a distance… aside from his work on Fantastic Four (on which he was a deal-breaker for me, as I only read it when people I am very impressed by are on it), I didn’t really read any of the characters that he worked on. But I loved seeing his art on his website, which I can recommend heartily for as long as it stays up: www.mikewieringo.com, and in the various sketchbook forums in which he still engaged as if an (extremely gifted) fan artist.

The comic industry has lost a real star this past weekend, and my condolences go out to his family and friends.

I have thus far been incredibly lax about posting my own efforts over at Elephant Words… THIS ENDS NOW!

Well, at least until I fail to do it next week, probably.

This shouldn’t be misread as a lack of pride on my part… I am incredibly proud of the work everyone has been doing over at the site, and I’m pretty happy with most of the stuff I’ve written there. We are now four weeks into the experiment, and I’m excited about what we’ve achieved so far, and very eager to see what we come up with in the future!

Here is my work so far:

08/08/07 – Matt Groening, My Betrayer…

02/08/07 – Secrets Uncovered, Mysteries Made

27/07/07 – Jericho Wept

21/07/07 – An Ancient Terror To Tea

Dude!

It was, like, my day at Elephant Words today…

My piece is called: “Secrets Uncovered, Mysteries Made”

Here is an excerpt:

A quite cheery and not all that irritating article over at the Telegraph website congratulates the UK success of Heroes:

This was cult viewing for boys waving imaginary light-sabres, not quality drama.

And yet, like the characters whose fates it follows, we now know that Heroes is a seemingly ordinary show possessed of extraordinary powers.

Last Wednesday 4.3 million viewers tuned in, giving BBC2 its biggest peak-time ratings win over BBC1 in more than a decade.

The only problem with the article is its persistent missing of the point by drawing a distinct but arbitrary and entirely imagined line between two “types” of people (“normal” people and ”nerds”), and trying to identify what it is about shows like Heroes and Lost that allows them to break out of their apparently preordained “cult” audiences.
