I have mentioned Scary Go Round before, but I have a secret…

While I’m fairly certain that the main reasons I enjoy the strip are the pretty art, the outlandish stories, the likeable characters and the charming irreverence, I noticed a change recently in the way some of the art, or more correctly some of the women in the art, looked to me.

I mean, they had always been drawn in quite sympathetic and cute ways, but suddenly, I was starting to notice a kind of… sexiness… that I hadn’t noticed before.

Now, I’m really not sure whether the phenomenally talented John Allison has always drawn the girls sexy, and I just hadn’t noticed, or it’s actually a change in my mental wiring, but for a while there, I almost didn’t notice the story, so busy was I, looking at the lovely Shelley Winters, the adorably spunky Amy Chilton, or the (possibly innappropriately young and improbably named) dark princess, Esther De Groot.

I tend to think of Shelley as the main protagonist of this strip, or at least, she is almost always at the centre of every story, so it seems only right that my perhaps peculiar fetish started with her, a few short months ago, with this image:

I’m not entirely sure why this was the trigger… possibly because, on that particular day, it seemed a suddenly precocious and sexual pose that Shelley was adopting. She was comforting a colleague, you see, and while she had already looked cute in that 60s style dress, the sudden shift of position onto the bench, and subsequent pushing in of her bottom was a shock to the system. She has concern on her face, but her posture is accentuating something else entirely… And even the worried little tug on her hair doesn’t hide it.

So of course, by the above image, I was already primed to notice, for the first time, quite how pouty, chesty, and leggy the lovely Ms Winters is. Sigh.

The following story follows Shelley and her friend Amy to the town fete. Much faffing around jam competitions ensues for Shelley, which would have been but vaguely interesting, but look at that cute summer dress! Look at it! Look at how she’s leaning, available, against the jam table!

I know, I know, more jam… but look at that figure in profile…! Look at those curves! That tiny waist! Even the funny looking blonde lady in the background can’t take her eyes off her…

And by this point, of course, Allison isn’t even trying to hide his deliberate provocation of my desire!

 
Amy Flirts

At the same time, Amy is puttering around, midriff out, flirting with the locals. Admittedly, Amy is already a little more sexually precocious then Shelley, so her stickyoutie bottom and alluring, exotic tattoo is more typical to the character, and is just supplemental to the wave of sexy rushing through the series, like a Shelley shaped tsunami.

As is Mr Allison’s wont, that story finished quite abrubtly, and it wasn’t long before the lovely Esther returned. Now I’ll be honest, Esther’s terse and thinly veiled contemptuous nature had already captivated me a little. She was one of my favourites on introduction, and she has only become more favouriter.

See…! Even she’s gone all sexy! She has, in short months, blossomed from awkward gothy schoolgirl into ethereal Gothy queen (capital letter deliberate).

And I think Allison may be developing a little bit of a crush on her as well, because in the last several months of reading the strip daily, she’s the only female character who has had any on-camera beddy-byes action. Here, he’s even drawn her naked, and barely covered over… And as if to press the point home, there’s her casually discarded outfit on the bed on top of her. We are led to the point again: If these clothes are here, they are no longer around Esther, and if they are no longer around Esther, than she is no longer inside them, which means that holy-cokey, she’s nekkid! Oh yes!

Allison tied off this story with a Halloween event, and this required that Esther wear a cheerleader outfit. No complaints here, of course. But we’ve never seen her willowy legs, as far as I recall, and now we’re practically looking up her tiny skirt!

Thankfully, my ongoing and steadily more excitable affair with the strip has been curtailed slightly, by Allison’s shift in art style in recent days. I don’t like his current style quite as much, it turns out, but that’s okay. Allison is forever playing around with his working methods and art styles, so I’m guessing it won’t be long before we’re back to something awesome.

At which point, expect more Scary Go Round sexy going on in my head-pan.
