- @VagendaMagazine In which state or in general? #
- @andydiggle Wasn't the point that characters couldn't get out of their own way enough to see eye-to-eye on shit? They weren't special ops… #
- @andydiggle …Most days you can't get 2 people on internet to agree or co-ordinate shit & that's without immediate survival being an issue. #
- @andydiggle I mean, I get that everyone's getting hung up on Lindelof connection, but Scott has form on making movies that piss people off. #
- @andydiggle …And also on spinning incoherence out of solid writing work: http://t.co/bETsxELH #
- @steevbishop BAD CONTINYUITY THAT DOESN'T EVEN MAKE SENSE LINDELOF SHOULD BE ASHAMED OF HIMSELF. #
- @steevbishop …WHAT DOES THE TABLE LAMP EVEN MEAN? #
- @steevbishop IF THIS FUCKING BORING ASS SHOE DOESN'T PAY OFF IM GONNA KILL SOMONENE! #
- @TinyMaster EVERYTHING? (I actually quite like how BSG panned out, though that very last scene was heavy-handed… #
- @TinyMaster …Though it always amuses me that, aside from occasional geek wryeness, people are relatively low on nerd-rage about it.) #
- @emslj Was there any audience participation? I think I imagined there'd be audience participation. #
- @emslj "Now it's Monday" is the most beautifully weighted three word sentence in history. EVEN BETTER than all the others. #
- @andydiggle Pedantry has so little application in real-life (or real fictional life). Liked how Lost handled whole dissemination of data. #
- @TinyMaster Ah. Whereas I felt like there was a very clear loss of cohesion at the point of New Caprica. An untidy scrabble to fit stuff in. #
- @TinyMaster (I LOVED it throughout, but at the time I know it felt like I was in a minority of people who let the Watchtower stuff slide.) #
- @TinyMaster (I fucking LOVE the idea of songs that are universal, as hippyish as it is, so that got a buzz out of me.) #
- @andydiggle Ah, I don't know about that. I don't think you get to have Prisoner, David Lynch or Cronenberg if you apply that rule. #
- @andydiggle Or most fairy tales. If you have an ACTION movie, sure. But I think people get too hung-up on trying to outsmart their stories. #
- @TinyMaster Hah, good call… been thinking about it since mentioned it earlier. #
- Bear McCreary really is one of the things that BSG got absolutely right. #
- @granulac Serenity and patience? I don't know. Never been able to manage either. #
- @charltonbrooker It can copy a human down to the smallest detail, but it isn't human. #
- @emslj What did you do? Did you trust his lies? AFTER I SPECIFICALLY TATTOOED ON YOU THAT YOU SHOULDN'T? #
- @acheverton Hah… so totally in the middle on this one. So much I loved that the little bits I didn't are NO WAIT FAT APOLLO! @TinyMaster #
- @acheverton …WHY won't Roslin JUST DIE? Also, what, STARBUCK SPACE ANGLE? @TinyMaster (Seriously, I did love it.) #
- @emslj !!SEIL SIH TSURT TON OD!! #
- @acheverton I didn't actually mind that that was the case, so much that it was totally off-the-cuff last minute & dismissed… #
- @acheverton Never had a problem with eleventh hour story crazy like that, but if you're going to do it, you have to sell the hell out of it. #
- @acheverton No, but… it ALL matters, during their lifetime. It's just on a cosmic scale that it doesn't. That's… just life, isn't it? #
- @acheverton I didn't have huge issue with the individual story-elements, so much as how totally undersold it was by the pacing/edit. #
- @acheverton (In these cases I just swap out "God" for "the universe", & it instantly changes my frowny face into a "wow" one.) #
- @acheverton NO place, really? Wow, I didn't know fiction had so many RULES. #
- @acheverton That makes it WAY more boring than I'd previously realised. #
- @acheverton Well, that's not an issue with God in fiction, that's an issue with lazy writing. #
- @acheverton There's a solid argument that God is woven into BSG from VERY early on. What show fails at constantly is nailing dismount. #
- @acheverton Whoops, those crossed over. #
- @acheverton I don't know, sir. I think it was worryingly clear that that was where they were heading from middle point. #
- @ryanklindsay That's a fair point. You're primed to read my review now, then? It's LONG, btw. http://t.co/4Hy5fTZI #
- @ryanklindsay Thanks, man. Glad you liked it. #
- Lost track… so @sarcastathon is trolling her FB friends with her hilarious genitals, & @MhairiMcF wishes @rob_hyde would stop doing same? #
- I am not touching any of these "sexualising children at the Daily Mail" links with a bargepole. Been caught out like this before. #
- @tetrarchangel Plastic. #
- @charltonbrooker IS POSSESSED BY DEMONS! BURN HIM AT THE STAKE! #
- @tetrarchangel Easy is relative. Seriously, where the fuck is anyone going to get obsidian? #
- Fucking hell. @timminchin's White Wine In The Sun is a bit emotioney whatever the time of year, eh? #
- @tetrarchangel This… isn't going to be one of those Left Behind style books, is it? #
- @tetrarchangel "…& the earth will turn to gold, & the monkey will lie down with the cheetah, & Gabriel will call his soldiers home." #
- @tetrarchangel Oh well that fucking clinches it. I've just helped you nail down a detail in your crazy cult propaganda novel, haven't I? #
- @tetrarchangel Fucking knew this'd happen. I never learn my lesson. #
- @tetrarchangel Blimey. #
- Played 1st game of Risk in ages yesterday – got it for my birthday – in ages. Great game, but pieces uninspiring. Are alternates available? #
- @SamShepherd Fascinating. Actually hadn't even considered this, despite being a bit uncomfortable with over-sharing of kid stuff. #
- @SamShepherd (But that's more about how the world reacts to that stuff. LOVE the little short vids of my nephew that sister shared on YT… #
- @SamShepherd …but we all know what internet commenters are like, innit?) #
- @acheverton Hm. Really thinking more about pieces that are closer to the Carcassonne/Game Of Thrones aesthetic, but may consider zombies… #
- This rain is brilliant. When the sun comes through the clouds & it warms up a little later today, my garden will love it. …what? #
- @bimadew Oooh, good news! (IS it good news? Your simile gave a sense more of desperation than love, which doesn't sound right.) #
- @sispurrier Hah, oh god that's AWFUL. The marketing people on the movie, across the board, have been dreadful. It's flawed but not that bad. #
- The hierarchy of fiction writing is interesting; a trickle down effect. Think it goes: Movies – Television – Books – Comics… #
- …people in comics apply a scrutiny to film/tv on a regular basis that the work of their peers might not stand up to… #
- @kierongillen You're a board game genius – where would I find custom Risk pieces? The bits that come with the current edition are shit. #
- @kierongillen (I'm too used to the beautifully simple aesthetic of Carcassonne & Game Of Thrones to fuck around with tiny wobbly infantry.) #
- @emslj ALIEN PENIS? #
- @NicWilko Internet, mainly! #
- @Sulman It also doesn't make it any MORE valid, but thanks for clarifying that, you know how I get.
# - Hah, tracking Prometheus response, Lindelof just RT'd wonderful double-header tweet: #
- https://t.co/ZlcJiyfZ – "I just spent 8 hours rewatching a film I didn't enjoy. For 4 of those I was breaking the law." Fucking genius. #
- @Sulman Of course! Opinion is beautiful. No requirement for everyone to append IMHO or anything. But also no mandate to be so definitive. #
- @groonk I liked it, with reservations. It took me far enough to a story that I wanted to hear that I was happy to go the extra distance… #
- @groonk …HOWEVER, that extra distance was I think more by accident than design. A lot of mishandling going on. Mainly editing, I think. #
- @groonk Bleated on about it here: http://t.co/4Hy5fTZI . Bear in mind I tend to have democratic approach to media to a fault. #
- @groonk I thought it was about as flawed as Ink, but prettier, & I loved that. Should I expect more than that from Scott? Probably. #
- @groonk I've got a blind-spot for the term "plot holes", to be honest. I don't tend to see them. Most raised so far made sense to me. #
- @groonk If anything I think it underplayed the potential for weight too much in the latter half. & yeah, agreed. Most of the distance I… #
- @groonk …had to cover was in that final act. & THAT was more about bringing it in line with Alien franchise than was healthy for the film. #
- @groonk Read my review. I'd like to know what you think. Then I've got a couple of better ones for you to read! #
- @kierongillen You know they aren't dissimilar in build, except the infantry are too tiny to stand. Balls. (That does look nice.) #
- Fucking love @faitherinhicks. She reviews Alien here: http://t.co/7defvjR2 & Prometheus here: http://t.co/9DnCapfw WITH SPOILERS & AWESOME. #
- @grrlpowercomic Earth wouldn't know how to IDENTIFY dumbest scientists. Suspect there are still dumber, even in the future. @faitherinhicks #
- @grrlpowercomic Hah, well, I imagine Steve Irwin might've been more comfortable with weird alien lifeform than crazy giant alien building. #
- @Sulman @sarahditum @nathanditum I think it's fair to say that one can't rely on a brilliant movie from Scott OR Cameron any more. #
- @Sulman Or Spielberg for that matter. Not including Lucas in there for obvious reasons. @sarahditum @nathanditum #
- @Sulman I guess Titanic was as big a deal in New York as it was in Southampton? @steevbishop #
- @Sulman Hm… I only saw it once at the cinema, so my memory is hazy, but it wasn't of a solid movie. Need rewatch? @nathanditum @sarahditum #
- http://t.co/YKvBkF5o – Does anybody know what this pigeon is doing? It was a bit weird to watch. #
- @steevbishop HEY WAIT THAT SOUNDS LIKE AN ERECTION… @Sulman #
- @Sulman Did Cameron ever state intention? It felt like he was trying to make a clumsy ecological movie at the time. @nathanditum @sarahditum #
- @Sulman Oh, I know… I meant whether he'd intended to make a kid's movie. Remember it being pretty violent. By proxy. #
- @Sulman Did you see John Carter? I thought it hit similar bullet-points, but had bags of charm. The world didn't see it that way, mind. #
- @Sulman It's not dissimilar in subject matter, either – both are science-fantasy, but Carter is more swashbuckle than power-suit. #
- @TinyMaster I PROMISE I won't watch any football. On the other hand, I liked Prometheus, so my opinion probably doesn't count for much.
# - @sarahditum OH MY GOD if you're hating on noodles, everything is up in the air.
# - @Sulman OH NO! You should be fucking ashamed of that. & you delivered your own set-up! OUCH!
But I liked it. @sarahditum # - Paging @nathanditum: @sarahditum is in state of emotional collapse. We saw this with PKD. Belief in psychedelic alien abduction imminent. #
- @Sulman I thought living in the US would cure your puns, but if anything you're getting worse. @sarahditum #
- @Sulman OR BETTER? @sarahditum #
- @Sulman Yeah? You read those? I keep seeing them in collected form, consider them, but haven't picked them up yet. #
- @Sulman Want to dip back into that universe, though, so maybe this week! #
- @Sulman Ah, that's fairly normal. When they focus on likeness TOO much, you often end up with a static page, so could be worse! #
- http://t.co/GvrJHvbv – Oh for fuck's sake. Some people can't even follow their own argument, can they? #
- …Defending the guy who tried to claim creative ownership of Venom on ownership of Angela, based on "it deriving from pre-existing works"? #
- Oh tut. Shouldn't have read that Guardian Prometheus post. More blame on script. But we haven't SEEN the script. We've seen Scott's film… #
- …I admit that I've probably done that before, but I'm not the one complaining of unscientific scientists. Have to observe to measure. #
- @SamShepherd It's the comments, not the post. The post is pretty charitable with the bits it doesn't like. #
- Regardless of script, it seems obvious that SOMEONE wanted to make a 2001-esque film. And Scott doesn't have a film that deep in his CV. #
- (Blade Runner has BECOME that deep, but only because that pure a noir movie leaves a lot of room for interpretation… #
- …IIRC when given the opportunity, Scott tries to close down the only real ambiguity in the movie.) #
- @Sulman Well, that doesn't surprise me – I don't know the film nearly as well as you do, but got that impression! #
- @sarahditum Self-reflecting syntax for the win. Or ftw. Is what we might say if we were cool kids. OMG MY FAVOURITE JUST DIED. @Sulman #
- @SamShepherd The thing is… I quite LIKE poring over & generating ideas. Asking the questions is half the fun of experiencing media for me. #
- @SamShepherd …More than the answers. I've seen it suggested in a couple of places that that is a negative behaviour, though.
# - @thisbrokenwheel Well, don't ever get into a conversation with Ridley Scott about whether or not Deckard is a replicant, then. #
- @thisbrokenwheel He will BURST THAT BUBBLE for ya in a second. #
- @thisbrokenwheel I thought I'd heard that, you know. The first pilot we ever met was on a ship carrying those damn things, which killed him. #
- @thisbrokenwheel That isn't even subtext. #
- @Sulman There's difference between skeptical enquiry & engagement of imagination. We're all capable of both, & no value judgement on either. #
- @Sulman (Coming from me, anyway.) But apparently the reason I liked the end of Lost is because I was tricked into it by cynical writers. #
- @Sulman …which, you know, some might think is how entertainment works. It just doesn't work for everyone the same way, obvs. #
- @Sulman I sometimes think that the internet would like to kill suspension of disbelief, the same way it wants to kill religion. #
- @Sulman Actually, for me suspension of disbelief only requires good will, & that can be built up a number of different ways. Logic only one. #
- @Sulman Hah, really? As well as you know me, you think I really didn't have a dozen alternates tweets that could have gone there. #
- @Sulman Generalisation is the LEAST of my worries. Trying too hard to see every side is a bigger problem. #
- @MhairiMcF Hang on, I'll find you that post someone did about Robin Hood. @Sulman #
- @MhairiMcF (While also mentioning how close dialogue in Natural Born Killers was to Tarantino's original script.) @Sulman #
- @Sulman That isn't entirely true, now, is it? You aren't a robot. We're more than capable of applying a voice to words, & we choose which. #
- @Sulman I'm assuming @mhairimcf is responding to something I said, about how the script & the film are different things? #
- @Sulman Specifically, the idea that the script is read as it's written? @mhairimcf #
- @Sulman Unearnt? Brilliant. So you REALLY believe that I think the WHOLE internet wants to kill religion? #
- @MhairiMcF http://t.co/muMM6466 – The history of Ridley Scott's Robin Hood, script to screen. It's a bit florid, but reveals a bit. #
- @MhairiMcF ? #
- @MhairiMcF I think you're referring to something but I'm not sure what? "Haven't seen the script"? "Mangled genius"? #
- Amy has worked out how to pitch movies to Hollywood. Four word high concepts. Post-dinner pastime, creating laughs where there weren't any. #
- Hell yes, we're watching Piranha 3dd! Doubt anything will be as impressive as Jerry O Connell's penis, mind. http://t.co/C3y5ehLI @GetGlue #
- Yay, Adult Pool! Totally stupid idea! http://t.co/C3y5ehLI @GetGlue #Piranha3DD #
- Fucking brilliant. This film couldn't be more slutty & gross. http://t.co/C3y5ehLI @GetGlue #Piranha3DD #
- Yay! Christopher Lloyd! http://t.co/C3y5ehLI @GetGlue #Piranha3DD #
- Of dude. This film is really gleefully going after the horror trope that unmarried sex deserves punishment. http://t.co/C3y5ehLI @GetGlue #
- Also oh my god, penis mutilation! Again! http://t.co/C3y5ehLI @GetGlue #Piranha3DD #
- Oh god, that might've just been the best line in cinema history. I'd tell you but it's a spoiler. http://t.co/C3y5ehLI @GetGlue #Piranha3DD #
- The Hoff! convincingly mortified at "rock bottom". http://t.co/C3y5ehLI @GetGlue #Piranha3DD #
- Bizarrely that was both more transgressive and gratuitous, & less impacting than the first one. The final set piece … http://t.co/C3y5ehLI #
- Beautiful looking movie so far. Proper epic. http://t.co/gwL8oyll @GetGlue @immortalsfilm #
- Yay! Our friend Rose is going to be out with us in a couple of weeks! Hardly ever see her, & lots of fun when we do. #

Wednesday 22nd May: “Tantrum recovery effort continues”
THIS IS THE NEWS!
(Fucking ace, as always.)

Game of Cats
Perfect.

History of mankind by Milo Manara

He said Star Trek is too “philosophical”? Screw that noise.
I don’t know when this interview happened but I AM SAD AND ANGRY NOW
The philosophies in Star Trek are kinda part of the actual setting. If you don’t get that, why are you allowed to make Star Trek movies.
Sigh. The whole point of Star Trek is that it’s philosophical. If you don’t want philosophical Science Fiction, there’s plenty of that for you to enjoy, but Star Trek is philosophical. Philosophy is part of Star Trek’s DNA, and if you’re given the captain’s chair, you’d better damn well respect that.
While you characters unbunch your panties, here’s a thing to consider: Abrams as a kid didn’t like Star Trek for being too philosophical. That’s an entirely legitimate reason for never having watched Star Trek as a kid. Abrams as an adult made a massively successful - both commercially and critically - Star Trek movie, which was both a sequel and a prequel and a reboot of a franchise dying on its arse.
I submit that the two are not entirely unrelated.
In fact, I’d go as far as to say that much - if not most - of the success, on every level, of J. J. Abrams’s Star Trek is precisely down to him not being a lifelong fan of the show.
When you cry and complain that Abrams shouldn’t have been allowed to make Star Trek films because he isn’t ‘one of us’; when you mock or criticise someone because their worldview isn’t yours, and you say it shouldn’t be allowed to intersect with yours; when you denigrate, rather than celebrate, diversity; when you desperately try to keep your part of the world clean and safe for yourself and don’t let the outsider and the alien in…
Then maybe the philosophy of Star Trek hasn’t taught you as much as you like to think it has.
I’m a pretty arrogant guy, so it isn’t often that someone says exactly what I was thinking, when I didn’t know it was exactly what I was thinking, and I can’t think of a single way to improve on it or amend it.
Oh, but for more rumination on fandom, you should definitely listen to Unanswered episode 11 - http://unansweredpodcast.wordpress.com/2013/05/01/show-11/
